Aromatherapy & Reiki

Adding essential oils to your reiki practice

Although aromatherapy is generally known as an alternative therapy, the term complementary seems more fitting as aromatherapy works along with other modalities including Reiki.

What is Reiki

Reiki is a Japanese word meaning “universal life-force energy”; the “Ki” in the word is the same as the Chinese word Chi or Qi meaning “the energy which underlies everything”. As an energy-based healing modality, the focus of Reiki is on healing the body, reducing stress and achieving relaxation. Modern Reiki techniques were developed in Japan in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s and brought to Western countries after World War Two. Reiki has gained increasing popularity and credibility in last number of years. In fact, Dr. Mehmet Oz, talk show host and renowned surgeon, is married to Lisa Oz, a Reiki master and both believe strongly in energy work. Many hospitals and health care facilities are now offering Reiki and Therapeutic Touch (TT) to their patients.

Effects of Reiki

Reiki treatments offer many benefits to the recipients. Here are some of the effects that have been reported:

  • Relaxes
  • Reduces tension and stress
  • Boosts the immune system
  • Reduces blood pressure
  • Speeds up healing
  • Increases energy

Reiki Treatments

The Reiki practitioner places their hands on the client using light touch and no pressure or by placing their hands just above the client’s body. They work by drawing in the energy of the universe and channeling this positive, healing energy to the client. The client may feel this as a warm or tingling sensation in the body.

Reiki and Aromatherapy

Using aromatherapy essential oils can enhance Reiki treatments. Reiki will always work for the highest good, so when used with the energy contained within essential oils, it will direct the energy to where it is needed and do the most good. Use essential oils in a diffuser in the room where the Reiki treatment will be performed, create an aromatherapy blend to spray around the room while the Reiki treatment is performed.

Essential Oils Used in Reiki

Chakras, Reiki and Aromatherapy

There are seven chakras or energy centers in different parts of the body. Each chakra is associated with a group of organs. Working together in balance they help keep a person well. The hand positions used in Reiki, cover and treat all major chakras. When Reiki is used with essential oils related to the seven major chakras, together they create a powerful union. Reiki treatments clear the chakras of negative energy and blockages, restoring the ki or chi and helping the person to heal.

Essential oils and aromatherapy are increasingly being used to increase the effectiveness of other healing modalities such as Reiki.
