Aromatherapy in the New Millenium

Return to Spiritual Aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy and the use of essential oils is one of the ways that people can cope with world change and spiritual upheaval.

During the last 50 years there have been several end-of-the-world predictions and obviously they have not come to fruition. The Mayan calendar abruptly ends on December 21st, 2012. Some people believe that this predicts the end of the world. Others believe that this predicts the beginning of a new age.

Cultural and Religious Predictions

It is interesting that so many cultures and religions have pinpointed this date as significant. The Christian bible suggests that Armageddon will take place in 2012. Nostradamus, born December 1503, was famous for his prophesies, one of which was that a devastating asteroid would hit the earth in 2012. Even scientists have joined in the conversation with a few scientific predictions; for instance, Yellowstone National Park"s famous volcano is set to erupt in 2012. NASA confirms that solar storms are getting worse and they will be at their peak in 2012.

World Change

If it is true that a change is coming to the world, it is much more hopeful to believe that this change is not one of devastation, but one of rebirth. Perhaps there will be an end to a negative and destructive way of life as we know it - fear, pain, disease, greed, corruption and addiction – and in its place there will be a harmonious atmosphere as people work together in nature, seeing beauty, having compassion, love, community support and healing one another the natural way.

Nature"s Healing Remedies

Assuming there is a transition period between the world as it is today and the world that is to come, there will be a lot of anxiety and upset. Nature has provided many healing remedies, including essential oils, to help with spiritual and emotional needs. As people feel less connected to their current way of life they are increasingly seeking out more traditional ways of nurturing their spirit and healing their bodies. Some people believe that essential oils help to form a bridge between the two worlds of spirit and matter.

Bergamot Essential Oil

Bergamot essential oil has a citrusy, slightly spicy and floral aroma. Its key qualities include: anti-depressant, balancing, encouraging, refreshing, sedative, soothing, calming and uplifting.

Frankincense Essential Oil

Frankincense essential oil has a slightly camphorus and woody smell. Its key qualities include: clearing, protective, restorative, uplifting, sedative and tonic.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender essential oil has a mellow, floral smell. Its key qualities include: anti-anxiety, balancing, calming, cleansing and healing.

Using Essential Oils

To use these three essential oils of bergamot, frankincense and lavender try the following aromatherapy techniques:
  1. Mix the 3 oils and add 10 drops maximum to a bath
  2. Add the mixture or the individual essential oils to an aromatherapy diffuser
  3. Add the mixture or the individual essential oils to a warm wet cloth and apply as a compress on an aching area (for example on the head for a headache)
  4. Add the essential oils to a spray bottle with water. Shake the bottle and spray around the room.
  5. Apply the essential oils to cotton balls or tissues and carry them around for an added lift.
